For the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam, formerly known as the Tropenmuseum (as referred to within this project), the exhibition titled "Kleren Maken De Man" (Clothes Make the Man) has been curated in collaboration with the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. This exhibition takes visitors on an immersive journey through the significant era of Desi Bouterse, the former president of Suriname, by highlighting his most striking and iconic clothing items. Each piece of attire serves as a powerful reflection of his personality, political influence, and the socio-political climate of the time. The exhibition not only showcases these memorable outfits but also provides an insightful exploration of the role clothing plays in shaping identity, power, and perception.
This project taps into the fascination with political intrigue, crime, and powerful figures to create a compelling narrative that resonates with contemporary audiences. By combining historical storytelling with modern digital tools, an immersive and impactful experience was crafted that both captivates and informs.
Alongside the exhibition concept, a dynamic online experience has been developed to further promote and complement the exhibit and make it more accessible and relevant to a younger audience. This digital extension allows for broader access to the content, offering virtual visitors the chance to explore key themes, garments, and stories. In addition to the exhibition itself, matching promotional materials have been designed to capture the essence of the show and draw attention to this unique exploration of fashion and history.

Desi Bouterse, volledige naam Desiré Delano Bouterse, werd geboren op 13 oktober 1945 in Domburg (District Wanica), Suriname. Hij kwam ter wereld als de zoon van Desiré Juliaan Bouterse en Wilhelmina van Gemert. Bouterse groeide op in Paramaribo en vertrok in op 23-jarige leeftijd naar Nederland, waar hij in het Nederlandse leger diende.
Hoe diep ging zijn macht, en hoe ver reikte zijn bereidheid om die te behouden? Achter de façade van staatsmanschap ligt een wereld waarin tegenstanders werden geëlimineerd, levens werden verwoest, en miljarden werden verdiend in het verborgene. Zijn nalatenschap is een web van macht, geweld en corruptie dat tot op de dag van vandaag littekens heeft achter gelaten die nooit geheeld zijn.
